A Specialist Fostering Journey
I have been a foster parent for approaching six years and have welcomed primary school aged children, mums with their babies, and more recently, babies with complex health needs.
This is a specialist area of fostering, and fostering babies with medical needs requires in-depth training for the specific needs of each child. However, I have found this a really positive experience and have thoroughly enjoyed expanding my knowledge to enable me to care for these very special babies. Two of the babies I have cared for have come straight from hospital, so I’ve had the added benefit of expert advice from the nursing staff there.
Learning About Fostering Babies with Complex Needs
The babies I have cared for have had a range of diagnoses including hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida. They have needed oxygen at times and have been tube fed, but I have received comprehensive training in these areas, and I often do my own research too. I have approached relevant charities who have offered fantastic information specific to each condition, which is invaluable.
Support from the Community and Apex
The community health team in my local area have been fantastic in supporting me every step of the way, with practical involvement in supplying equipment as well as some emotional support.
As always, my Supporting Social Worker Holly has been extremely supportive of my chosen fostering role. That ongoing support has made all the difference.
Challenges and Rewards
As with most aspects of fostering, there have been some challenging times along the way, such as understanding the signs and symptoms of any issues with health conditions and attending the many health appointments.
But seeing these babies develop, grow, and improve in health whilst in my care is one of the best things I have experienced during my fostering journey. Their steps of progression may be small and take a while to achieve, but I have loved every minute of seeing their journey unfold.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea — but it’s definitely mine!
